The air in the Miller household hummed with a tension as thick and cloying as the summer humidity. David, usually so at ease in his childhood home, felt a prickle of unease crawl up his spine. He sat at the polished oak dining table, the faint scent of lemon polish a stark contrast to the sour notes of unspoken disapproval that permeated the room. Across from him, Mindy, her eyes bright and hopeful, was trying, with all the gentle earnestness of her twenty years, to navigate the treacherous waters of parental opinion.
"We understand your concerns, truly," Mindy began, her voice soft but steady. She’d rehearsed this a dozen times in her head, whispered it to David in stolen moments under the glow of streetlights. "But David and I have been friends for so long. We know each other, and we respect each other's dreams."
David’s father, Mr. Miller, steepled his fingers, his gaze fixed on David with an intensity that felt like a physical weight. "Dreams are one thing, David. A sensible future is another. And this… this entanglement with Mindy Sandcastle is not part of that sensible future."
