The summer air, heavy with the scent of salt and sunscreen, still clung to David’s skin like a second shadow. It was a scent that, for years, had been inextricably linked to Mindy. Now, it was the scent of their secret. They met in the hushed twilight, a time when the world seemed to hold its breath, poised between the day’s clamor and the night’s quiet embrace. Their usual haunt, the old oak grove at the edge of town, felt both familiar and charged with a new, thrilling tension.
Mindy arrived first, a whisper of movement against the deepening blues and purples of the sky. She wore a light sundress, the kind that billowed gently in the breeze, and her hair, usually a wild cascade, was pulled back in a loose braid. David’s heart gave a familiar lurch, a sensation that had become both a comfort and a constant, low-grade ache since their confessions. He emerged from the shadows of the trees, and her eyes, wide and bright, found him.
“You’re late,” she said, her voice a soft accusation, but the smile playing on her lips betrayed her.
