Mindy traced the grain of the wood with a fingertip, her gaze fixed on the darkening horizon. The vibrant hues of the sky mirrored the turmoil within her, a kaleidoscope of excited anticipation for New Orleans and a profound, aching fear of leaving this behind. David, beside her, was a solid presence, his shoulder a comforting anchor, but tonight, even his familiar warmth couldn’t quite dispel the chill that had begun to settle in her soul.
