Chapter 4
The Dentist's Path
David is focused on his future as a dentist, a respectable career chosen perhaps to please his parents, but his heart holds other aspirations.
The sterile scent of disinfectant was a surprisingly comforting aroma to David. It was a smell that promised order, cleanliness, a tangible path forward. The fluorescent lights of the dental lab hummed a low, steady tune, a stark contrast to the chaotic symphony of his own heart. He traced the smooth, cool surface of a plaster cast of a human jaw, his fingers moving with a practiced grace that belied the turmoil churning within him. Dentistry. Her name was a melody that echoed in the quiet spaces of his mind, a vibrant splash of color against the monochrome of his intended future.
He remembered the day they’d taken that picture. It was after a particularly grueling dental anatomy lecture, the kind that made his eyes ache and his brain feel like overcooked pasta. Mindy, ever the beacon of spontaneity, had insisted they celebrate surviving it with double-scoop cones from the little shop downtown. He’d almost said no, had almost succumbed to the lure of his textbooks, but her infectious enthusiasm, the way her eyes sparkled when she spoke of adventure, had always been his undoing.
