Estrangement

The slam of the front door echoed through the quiet suburban street, a final, definitive punctuation mark on a lifetime of shared meals and whispered bedtime stories. David stood on the porch, the worn-out welcome mat a stark contrast to the icy chill that had settled in his chest. His breath hitched, a ragged sound lost in the vast, indifferent evening air. Behind him, the house, once his sanctuary, now felt like a fortress erected against him, its windows dark and unyielding. His parents. "You are not welcome here anymore, David," his father's voice, usually booming with authority, had been unnervingly calm, a chilling prelude to the storm. "Not as long as you insist on this… this foolishness with Mindy Sandcastle."
