David's father reacts with anger and disappointment, making it clear that his disapproval is unwavering and posing a significant threat to their relationship.
The air in the Miller household had always been thick with unspoken rules and expectations, a carefully constructed atmosphere of order that David had, for the most part, navigated with a quiet compliance. But tonight, the air crackled with a different kind of tension, a storm brewing in the usually stoic demeanor of his father. David sat across from him at the polished mahogany dining table, the remnants of a Sunday roast long cleared, leaving only the stark white of the tablecloth and the heavy silence between them. His mother, usually a buffer, sat beside his father, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her gaze fixed somewhere on the intricate floral pattern of the wallpaper.
"So," his father began, his voice a low rumble that always set David’s teeth on edge, "you think this is a wise path you're choosing, David?"
David swallowed, the dryness in his throat making it difficult to speak. He’d rehearsed this conversation a hundred times in his head, bracing himself for the inevitable. "I think it's the right path for me, Dad."
