Chapter 6
The Treasure Chest Surprise
Following the phone's increasingly bizarre instructions, the narrator finally arrives at the marked treasure spot. Expecting glittering gold, they instead find a chest filled with… socks! Magical, colorful, and very chatty socks.
The phone buzzed in my hand, a little jiggle that felt like a giggle. "Almost there!" it chirped, its voice sounding suspiciously like a rubber duck being squeezed. I squinted at the glowing map, which was now showing a very wiggly line pointing towards a particularly mossy-looking boulder. "Sing to the trees," it had insisted just moments before, and I'd obliged, belting out a surprisingly tuneless rendition of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" to a group of very unimpressed oaks. To my utter astonishment, a section of the boulder had rumbled open, revealing a dark, earthy tunnel. So, the rubber duck phone was definitely onto something.
I took a deep breath, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and something vaguely… sock-like? That was odd. Even odder was the fact that I was following the instructions of a phone that sounded like a bath toy, after having sung to trees. My life had taken a sharp left turn into the wonderfully weird, and I was surprisingly okay with it.
The tunnel was short, opening into a small, sun-dappled clearing. Right in the center sat a chest. Not just any chest, mind you. This was a proper treasure chest, dark wood bound with what looked like tarnished brass, and it was practically humming with a faint, golden light. My heart did a little somersault. Gold! Jewels! Maybe even a solid chocolate dragon!
