The woods felt different now, even in my memory. Or maybe it was just me. I clutched the phone in my hand, its smooth, cool surface a stark contrast to the rough bark of the oak tree I was leaning against, my own backyard oak. It was no longer just a strange, old phone. It was my strange, old phone. The one that had led me on the most wonderfully ridiculous adventure a kid could imagine. It had a faint, warm glow to it, even now, a gentle pulse that felt like a friendly heartbeat. I’d found it, and it had found me. It was a thought that tickled my brain like a stray feather.
