Chapter 18
A Drawer of Secrets
Back home, the narrator looks at their phone with newfound affection. And in their sock drawer? A few extra, special socks that occasionally whisper secrets or offer a friendly greeting.
The woods felt different now, even in my memory. Or maybe it was just me. I clutched the phone in my hand, its smooth, cool surface a stark contrast to the rough bark of the oak tree I was leaning against, my own backyard oak. It was no longer just a strange, old phone. It was *my* strange, old phone. The one that had led me on the most wonderfully ridiculous adventure a kid could imagine. It had a faint, warm glow to it, even now, a gentle pulse that felt like a friendly heartbeat. I’d found it, and it had found me. It was a thought that tickled my brain like a stray feather.
I traced the etched patterns on its back, patterns I’d barely noticed in my initial panic and excitement. They seemed to swirl and dance, hinting at stories I hadn't yet uncovered. The phone hadn't spoken to me since we’d returned the last of the chatty socks, but that was okay. We had a silent understanding now. It knew I wouldn't trade it for all the gold in the world, and I knew it wouldn't trade me for… well, for anything a phone could possibly want. Maybe a really good charger? I’d have to ask it about that later, if it felt up to a chat.
A soft rustle drew my attention to the house. My mom was calling me for dinner. I tucked the phone carefully into my pocket, the glow dimming to a barely perceptible ember. It felt like a secret, a shared secret between me and this peculiar piece of magic.
