A Badger's Second Chance
On one of their sock-finding journeys, they encounter the grumpy badger again. Perhaps this time, the narrator must answer a riddle about socks or offer the badger a treat to pass.
The Magical Phone, which I’d affectionately nicknamed ‘Sparky’ (much to its own, presumably digital, chagrin), buzzed in my pocket. It was a rather insistent buzz, like a tiny, determined bumblebee trapped in denim. “Next stop: Barnaby Button’s backyard,” Sparky’s tinny voice chirped, a sound that still made me jump a little, even after all these sock-returning escapades. “He’s missing a particularly fetching pair of navy blue argyles. Apparently, they’re quite the conversation starters at Bingo night.”
We were on a mission, of course. Following Sparky’s increasingly outlandish GPS, which now often involved instructions like “turn left at the giggling mushroom” or “hop over the sleeping gnome,” was becoming my new normal. My room, once a sanctuary of neatly folded clothes, was now a bustling dormitory for lost and found hosiery. There was Bartholomew, a perpetually anxious wool sock who claimed to have been kidnapped by a rogue tumble dryer. Then there was Penelope, a feisty red sock with a penchant for dramatic monologues about the injustice of being separated from her twin. And, of course, the original treasure trove: the talking socks.
“Are you sure this Barnaby Button fellow appreciates argyles?” Penelope grumbled, peeking out of my backpack. “Some people just don’t have an eye for *fabulous*.”
