The air in the small apartment felt thick, heavy with unspoken fears and the lingering scent of stale coffee. Dean traced the condensation ring on the table, his usual easygoing demeanor replaced by a taut anxiety. Alyson sat opposite him, her fingers interlaced so tightly her knuckles were white. The silence between them stretched, a tangible entity that pressed in on all sides. It had been days since they’d witnessed… *it*. Days since the ordinary comfort of their lives had been ripped apart by the sudden, brutal violence that had unfolded in the alley behind the diner.

“I just… I can’t shake it, Dean,” Alyson finally whispered, her voice raspy. “The way he just… fell. And that mask. It was so blank, so empty.” She shivered, though the room was warm.

Dean reached across the table, his hand covering hers. His touch, usually a grounding force, felt a little shaky. “I know, Al. Me neither. And the police… they just brushed it off, didn’t they? ‘An unfortunate incident,’ they said. Like it was a dropped plate, not a man’s life.” His jaw clenched. “And then that… that *thing* that happened to Jamie’s car. That wasn’t a coincidence.”
