Chapter 8

The Abbot's Growing Doubt

Abbot Kale summons Bishop Dark once more, his brow furrowed with concern that borders on exasperation. The escalating danger, the involvement of organizations like the Crimson Hand, and the whispers of dark rituals have clearly rattled the Abbot. He voices his profound unease with Dark's increasingly brutal methods and the collateral damage they inevitably leave behind. Kale questions the wisdom of the Church's continued reliance on such a volatile and morally ambiguous asset, even as he acknowledges Dark's undeniable effectiveness. The Abbot's doubt is a heavy burden, a sign that Dark's freedom to operate might soon be curtailed.

The air in Abbot Kale’s study was thick with the scent of old parchment and something else, something acrid and sharp that reminded Bishop Dark of cheap incense burning too long. My inquiries are… ongoing.” He let the word hang in the air, heavy with unspoken implications. His inquiries usually involved a lot of broken bones and hushed threats, not delicate tea parties.
