The stench of stale blood and something acridly metallic clung to Bishop Dark’s leathers, a perfume of his profession that even the Abbey’s blessed incense struggled to mask. Tolvo’s underbelly, a labyrinth of shadowed alleys and desperate souls, had yielded its secrets, but not without cost. He’d extracted the necessary whispers from the Crimson Hand, a grim exchange that left him with more bruises than answers, and a gnawing emptiness that no amount of ale could fill. The stolen Chalice of Aethelred was still out there, a festering wound in the Church’s hallowed heart, and the trail, though warmer, was far from cold.

He needed a moment, a sliver of peace before plunging back into the muck. The Abbey, despite its gilded façade, was a maze of expectations and pointed whispers, but there was one corner, a small haven tucked away in the guest quarters, that offered a different kind of solace. Sister Petra.

The door to her modest room was ajar, a sliver of lamplight spilling into the dim corridor. He pushed it open gently, the soft creak a familiar sound. She was there, seated at a small wooden table, her novice’s robes a pale contrast to the shadows that seemed to perpetually cling to him. Her unbound hair, the color of spun moonlight, cascaded over her shoulders as she traced patterns on the worn wood with a slender finger.
