Chapter 15
A Fragment of Truth in the Aftermath
As the dust settles and the Church's emissaries arrive to secure the recovered Chalice, Dark searches the sorcerer's destroyed sanctum for any tangible proof, any concrete lead regarding Talia. Amidst the arcane debris and shattered artifacts, he finds a cryptic clue: a small, intricately carved wooden bird, a symbol he vaguely recognizes, and a whispered word, barely audible above the wind, that he cannot quite place. This fragment of truth, however small, offers a new thread to follow, a tangible direction in the overwhelming fog of uncertainty surrounding his sister's fate. It's a sliver of hope in the desolation.
The acrid scent of burnt ozone and something far more foul, like spoiled meat left too long in the sun, still clung to the air. Bishop Dark coughed, a dry, rasping sound that scraped against his already raw throat. The sorcerer was gone, reduced to a smear of shadow and ash against the ravaged stone of his sanctum, and the Chalice of Aethelred, thankfully, was safe, nestled in the velvet lining of a hastily procured, albeit slightly singed, satchel. Church emissaries, their faces pale and drawn, scurried about like frightened mice, meticulously cataloging the destruction, their every movement a stark contrast to Dark’s own, which was a study in grim, focused desperation.
He ignored their hushed pronouncements and the cloying sweetness of their incense, his gaze sweeping over the wreckage. Shattered crystals, once humming with arcane energy, lay scattered like fallen stars. Tomes, their pages brittle and scorched, lay open to blasphemous incantations. The air still thrummed with residual power, a lingering hum that vibrated deep within his bones, a familiar, unwelcome resonance. He’d done what he was paid to do, what the Abbot had demanded, but the hollowness in his gut remained. The Chalice was recovered, the sorcerer dispatched, but the true prize, the one that gnawed at him with relentless ferocity, remained elusive. Talia.
His eyes, sharp and accustomed to the gloom, scanned the debris, searching for anything, *anything*, that might offer a clue. A shred of fabric, a discarded trinket, a hastily scrawled note – anything that wasn't just more evidence of the sorcerer’s depravity. The emissaries were efficient, their movements precise, but their focus was on the holy relic, on the cleansing of this unholy place. They wouldn't understand his obsession, wouldn't grasp the gnawing ache that drove him to sift through the ashes of dark magic for a ghost.
