Chapter 5

Shadows of Deceit

Bishop’s investigation deepens, his sharp eyes catching more than the villagers intended. He uncovers discarded items that don't belong to werewolves, hears hushed conversations that hint at secrets, and notices the local priest's unusual interest in the 'eradication' efforts. The werewolves' attacks, while brutal, seem to avoid certain individuals and locations. He begins to suspect a carefully orchestrated deception, a puppet show designed to incite fear and justify bloodshed. The possibility that this conspiracy reaches higher, perhaps even into the Church itself, begins to take root.

The air in Whisper hung thick and heavy, not with the scent of pine and damp earth, but with the cloying perfume of fear. Bishop Dark, despite the chill that had settled deep into his bones, found it a far more potent and unpleasant aroma than any he’d encountered in the muckiest of bogs. He’d spent the better part of the day wandering the fringes of the hamlet, his keen eyes, honed by years of discerning the subtle rot of sin, catching details that screamed louder than any terrified villager’s shriek.

The initial reports had been bloody simple: werewolves. Savage beasts tearing through livestock, leaving behind a trail of gnawed bones and terror. Werewolves, as far as his considerable experience went, weren't known for their paternal instincts or their fondness for handcrafted toys. Then there were the hushed whispers he’d overheard near the well, snippets of conversation that spoke not of ravenous beasts, but of ‘necessary measures’ and ‘keeping the peace.’ Peace, Bishop mused, usually involved less blood and fewer missing sheep.
