Chapter 19
A Hunter's Horizon
Bishop Dark departs Whisper, the events having etched themselves onto his soul. He carries the weight of his discoveries, the knowledge that the darkness he fights isn't always external, but can fester within the holiest of places. His relationship with the Church of Radiant Light is irrevocably fractured, the trust shattered. His future as a hunter of evil is now uncertain, his path diverging from the one he once knew, leading him toward a horizon shrouded in both newfound purpose and existential doubt.
The stench of pine and something far more primal clung to Bishop Dark like a second skin. Whisper was finally quiet, the screams and the howls silenced, replaced by the murmur of a village picking through its own wreckage. He’d done his job, as he always did, with a brutal efficiency that left the Church of Radiant Light both awestruck and deeply, profoundly horrified. They’d sent him to kill monsters, and he’d done it. But the monsters in Whisper, it turned out, were far more complicated than a simple snarl and a hunger for flesh.
He mounted his horse, a beast as jaded and world-weary as its rider, the Soul Sun blade sheathed at his side, its power still humming a low, dangerous tune. Grimm, the alpha of the pack, had watched him go from the edge of the treeline, a hulking silhouette against the bruised dawn. There had been no animosity between them, not anymore. Just a grim understanding, a shared disgust for the true rot that had festered in this seemingly peaceful hamlet. The Church, in their infinite, self-serving wisdom, had been so eager to condemn the wolves. So quick to see fangs and ignore the manipulation, the outright betrayal that had orchestrated the chaos.
“Don’t suppose you’ll be sending me a thank-you note, Abbot,” Bishop muttered, the words tasting like ash. He imagined Abbot Kale, hunched over his ledger, his face a mask of weary resignation. Bishop knew the Abbot regretted hiring him. Every damn day. But Bishop was good. Too good, perhaps. Too effective. Too much of everything, including a necessary evil that the Church couldn't quite bring themselves to purge.
