Chapter 18

The Abbot's Apology

Abbot Kale meets Bishop once more, the weariness in his eyes now mixed with profound regret. He is forced to acknowledge the Church's failings, the deep corruption that Bishop, with his excessive and unorthodox methods, was uniquely suited to expose. Bishop’s actions, though volatile, were undeniably necessary. The Abbot offers a strained apology, a tacit admission of their mistake in ever doubting, or perhaps fearing, their most effective, yet unruly, asset. The damage, however, is irreparable, and trust is a casualty of war.

They were for the Church, for the institution that had sent him, the man who was anathema to everything they preached, to clean up their messes.
