Chapter 15
The Serpent's Nest
Armed with Sarai's intelligence, Bishop infiltrates a hidden cell within the Church itself – the serpent's nest where the conspiracy was nurtured. The air is heavy with hypocrisy and forbidden rituals. He moves through the shadows, his Soul Sun blade a beacon against the encroaching darkness. He prepares for a final, devastating confrontation with the corrupt leaders who twisted faith into a weapon, their betrayal a festering wound upon the sacred order he once served.
The stench of old incense and something far fouler, something like stale sweat and desperation, clung to Bishop Dark like a cheap whore’s perfume. He moved through the labyrinthine halls of the Church’s underbelly, a place so far removed from the gilded sanctuaries above it might as well have been another dimension. This was the Serpent’s Nest, Sarai had called it, a festering wound of hypocrisy where faith was twisted into a cudgel and piety a cloak for something altogether more sinister. His boot heels echoed with a hollow finality on the flagstone, each step a testament to the crumbling edifice of his former reverence. The Soul Sun blade, nestled snugly in its scabbard, hummed with a low, anticipatory thrum against his hip. It craved the taste of corrupted souls, and Bishop was more than happy to oblige.
Sarai’s intel had been as precise as a surgeon’s scalpel, albeit delivered with her usual smarmy, transactional tone. “A hidden cell, Bishop,” she’d purred over the crackling line, the scent of her expensive perfume somehow bleeding through the ether. “Deep within the Church’s foundations. They call themselves the ‘Purifiers.’ Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Turns out they’re the ones orchestrating the Whisper mess, using the werewolves as a convenient scapegoat.” She’d paused, letting the implication sink in. “They’ve been… experimenting. Twisting sacred rites into something… unholy. And they’re led by someone you’ll find particularly distasteful. A former Abbot, now calling himself ‘The Shepherd.’”
Bishop had grunted, the word ‘Shepherd’ tasting like bile. He’d paid Sarai handsomely for the information, a hefty sum of coin and a promise of a future ‘skin payment’ that made her eyes gleam with avaricious delight. He didn’t begrudge her the transaction; in his line of work, information was currency, and sometimes the price was paid in flesh and sweat. It was just another layer of the grime that coated his existence, another reminder that even the holiest of institutions could harbor the vilest of vermin.
