The sunshine spilled in through the window, painting warm stripes across the rug where Danny sat, cross-legged and ready. His eyes, bright and full of wonder, were fixed on Papa, who held a small, colourful book. Today was a special day. Today, they were going to play with numbers.

"Hey, are you a math whiz?" Papa asked, his voice as gentle as a soft breeze.

Danny giggled, a sound like tiny bells. "Sure, I am!" he chirped, bouncing a little on his knees. He loved trying new things, and Papa always made learning feel like a grand adventure. Sometimes, the letters and words in books danced just a little too fast for him, and the numbers sometimes felt like a jumbled mess. But Papa was a patient guide, always ready with a smile and a way to make things clear.

"Well then," Papa said, tapping the book with a friendly finger, "let's do some addition!"

Danny wiggled with excitement. Addition! It sounded like a secret code, a way to make things bigger and more.

"One Danny," Papa began, pointing to a picture of a cheerful, wiggling figure that looked a lot like Danny himself, "plus one Danny..." He then pointed to another identical figure right beside the first. Danny watched, his brow furrowed just a tiny bit in concentration. One and another one. He held up one finger, then another.

"...equals two Dannys!" Papa finished, and on the page, two of the cheerful figures stood side-by-side, a happy pair.

Danny’s eyes widened. "Two Dannys!" he repeated, trying out the sound of it. He imagined himself, then another him, playing together. It was a funny, wonderful thought. He looked at his own two hands, then held them up. One, two. "Two!" he declared, a proud smile spreading across his face. He felt a little spark, a tiny flicker of understanding.

"That's right!" Papa beamed. "You’re already a math whiz!"

Danny preened a little. "I'm a math whiz!" he sang, the words feeling good in his mouth.

Papa turned the page. "Now, one Papa," he said, and Danny saw a picture of a kind-faced man, much like his own Papa, with a gentle smile. "plus two Papas..." This time, there were two Papa figures next to the first one.

Danny looked at the pictures, then at his fingers again. One Papa, and then two more Papas. He counted slowly, "One... two... three." He held up three fingers.

"Equals three Papas!" Papa confirmed, and on the page, three Papa figures stood together, looking like a very wise and friendly group.

"Three Papas!" Danny exclaimed, clapping his hands softly. It was like magic, how the numbers came together. He felt a little bit of that jumbled feeling in his brain start to smooth out.

The next page showed a bright, juicy-looking mango with a cheerful, almost smiling face. "One Mindy Mango," Papa read, "plus three Mindy Mangos..." Danny looked at the single mango, then at the three more that appeared beside it. He hummed to himself as he counted. One, two, three, four. He held up four fingers, his tongue peeking out slightly in concentration.

"Equals four Mindy Mangos!" Papa announced, and there they were, a little cluster of four happy, round mangoes.

"Four Mindy Mangos!" Danny cheered. He loved Mindy Mangos. They were so colourful and sweet. He imagined four of them, maybe sharing a juicy secret.

Papa turned another page, and this one had a picture of a fuzzy, round head with two little ears. "One bear head," Papa said, and Danny saw a single, rather cuddly-looking bear head. "plus four bear heads..." Four more bear heads popped up next to the first.

Danny looked at the page, then at his own head. One, then four more. He wiggled his ears. He counted, his lips moving silently at first, then he said it aloud, "One, two, three, four, five!" He held up five fingers, wiggling them in the air.

"Equals five bear heads!" Papa said, his eyes twinkling. On the page, five of the fuzzy bear heads were lined up, looking rather pleased with themselves.

"Five bear heads!" Danny giggled. He pictured five bear heads, maybe all wearing silly hats. It was so much fun! He felt a bubbly feeling growing inside him, a feeling of accomplishment. He looked at Papa, his face alight. "I'm a math whiz!" he declared again, this time with even more conviction.

"You are!" Papa agreed heartily. "You're a math whiz!"

Danny felt that spark again, stronger this time. He looked at the book, at the pictures, at the numbers. They weren't so scary after all. They were like little friends, joining together to make new friends. "Magic lyrics," he whispered to himself, looking at the way the words and numbers seemed to dance together on the page. "Mixing the numbers."

He felt a surge of confidence, a feeling that he could do this. "Oh, I can do it all!" he sang, his voice full of a newfound joy. He looked at the pages they had already read, at the two Dannys, the three Papas, the four Mindy Mangos, the five bear heads. He had added them all up!

Papa smiled, a warm, proud smile that made Danny feel even better. "And you know what, Danny?" he said softly. "You're right. You can do it all."

Danny felt a warmth spread through him, like drinking a cup of hot chocolate on a chilly day. He was learning. He was understanding. He was becoming a math whiz, just like Papa said. He looked at the book with eager eyes, ready for whatever came next. The numbers were starting to make sense, to sing their own happy song. He was ready for more.
