The Price of Family

Danny Bird’s stomach churned like a washing machine on its spin cycle. Guilt, a familiar, unwelcome guest, had taken up permanent residence there. Leo, his kid brother, his anchor in the swirling chaos of the world, was gone. Poof. Like a magician’s rabbit, except this rabbit was probably terrified and definitely not wearing a sequined top hat. Danny had promised himself, sworn on a stack of dog-eared comic books, that he’d keep Leo safe. And now? Now Leo was probably cold, hungry, and wondering why his big brother had let him wander into the night like a stray cat. The thought made Danny’s jaw clench, a muscle twitching near his temple like a nervous tic.

He paced his cramped apartment, the threadbare carpet a testament to his less-than-glamorous life. The walls, once a comforting shade of beige, now seemed to mock him with their blandness, a stark contrast to the lurid technicolor of the world he needed to re-enter. The world of shadowed alleys, whispered deals, and faces that could curdle milk. His old world. The one he’d spent the last three years clawing his way out of, brick by painful brick. But Leo… Leo was worth more than a thousand clean slates. Leo was worth the entire grimy, neon-drenched cityscape if that’s what it took.

He rummaged through a dusty box tucked away in the back of his closet, the scent of mothballs and forgotten dreams filling the air. Beneath a pile of faded band t-shirts, his fingers brushed against worn leather. A lock-picking set. A slim, wicked-looking switchblade. And a burner phone, its battery long dead, a relic from when ‘going straight’ felt more like a suggestion than a promise. He hefted the phone, its cool plastic a familiar weight in his palm. It felt… right. Like putting on a favorite, albeit slightly stained, leather jacket.
