The city exhaled a breath of exhaust fumes and stale ambition, a scent that clung to Danny Bird’s sweat-soaked shirt like cheap cologne. It was the smell of the gutters he’d clawed his way out of, a persistent reminder embedded in his bones. His apartment, a cramped box perched precariously above a laundromat, offered little respite; the rhythmic thrum of dryers was a constant lullaby of his past, a low vibration beneath the surface of his carefully constructed present. Danny Bird, they called him. A nickname earned in the back alleys, a whisper of a life he tried to outrun. He was a ghost of his former self, haunted by the faces he’d left behind, the deals he’d made, the metallic tang of blood he’d spilled. Guilt was a shadow that stretched long even in the dim light of his meager existence, a constant companion whispering doubts into the quiet hours, a cold knot in his stomach.

But then there was Leo. Leo, his kid brother, all of seventeen and too bright for their shared history. Leo, with his clumsy optimism and a smile that could still crack Danny’s hardened shell, a smile that smelled faintly of bubblegum and innocence. Leo was the anchor, the sliver of hope that kept Danny from drowning in his own regrets. He was the only family Danny had left, the reason he’d stayed clean, stayed out of the game.

The phone call came on a Tuesday, the kind of day that started with a watery sunrise and promised nothing but more of the same gray drizzle. It was Leo’s landlord, a gruff man named Sal with a voice like gravel scraping concrete. “Danny? It’s about Leo. He ain’t been seen since last night.” The words landed like stones in Danny’s gut, each syllable heavy with dread. Leo, gone? Without a word? A cold dread snaked its way up his spine, tightening its grip, prickling his skin. Leo never just… disappeared. He was a creature of habit, a boy who texted his whereabouts like clockwork, his messages usually smelling of cheap pizza and late-night study sessions. Panic, a familiar, acrid taste, flooded Danny’s mouth, sharp and metallic. His fragile peace shattered, and the city’s exhaust fumes suddenly felt suffocating, thick with a new, terrifying possibility.
