Chapter 20
Danny Bird: Grounded?
The resolution. Leo is safe, but Danny's journey concludes with an uncertain future. Has he found redemption, or is his soul lost forever in the sky's limit?
The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with the stench of stale urine and desperation, a perfume Danny Bird knew all too well. He stood in the dim light, the flickering bulb overhead casting long, dancing shadows that mimicked the turmoil in his gut. Leo, bless his naive, perpetually optimistic heart, was safe. He was being bundled into the back of a police cruiser, bewildered but unharmed, a faint, hopeful smile already gracing his lips. Danny had seen the kid’s face, that pure, untainted relief, and for a fleeting second, the weight of the world had lifted.
But the world, as Danny had learned the hard way, always had a way of snapping back. The $50 million, the phantom treasure that had driven this whole mess, lay in a dusty duffel bag at Miller’s feet, a monument to greed and betrayal.
Danny watched it all, a strange detachment settling over him. He’d done it. He’d navigated the treacherous currents of his past, outmaneuvered a snake in human skin, and brought his brother back from the brink. He’d even managed to avoid adding any new felonies to his already overflowing rap sheet, a minor miracle in itself. So why did it feel less like a victory and more like a particularly nasty hangover?
