The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick and damp, smelling faintly of mildew and desperation. It was the kind of place where secrets went to die, or worse, to fester. Danny Bird, a man who’d spent more time in places like this than he cared to admit, found himself standing at the precipice of a decision that felt heavier than any brick he’d ever moved. Across from him, bathed in the sickly glow of a single, dangling bulb, sat Leo, his younger brother, looking more bewildered than terrified. Beside Leo, his hands clasped behind his back with an unnerving stillness, stood Marcus Thorne. Marcus, his so-called best friend, the man who’d promised brotherhood and delivered a knife to the gut.

“So,” Danny’s voice was rough, a gravelly whisper that seemed to scrape against the silence. “This is it, huh? The grand finale.” He gestured vaguely between Marcus and Leo. “My brother, the loot, and the snake who slithered his way into my life.”

Marcus offered a smile that didn’t reach his eyes, a practiced, predatory gleam. “Always the dramatics, Danny. I thought we were past all this. Just a simple business transaction, really.”
