The Crossroads

Danny reaches the climax. He faces a final, gut-wrenching choice that will determine Leo's fate and his own path, redemption or ruin.

The air in the abandoned warehouse tasted like rust and regret. Danny Bird stood in the cavernous space, the only sounds the drip, drip, drip of leaky pipes and the frantic thumping of his own heart. Across from him, bathed in the sickly glow of a single bare bulb, stood Marcus Thorne, his so-called best friend, looking less like a snake and more like a particularly smug vulture. Leo was tied to a chair behind Marcus, a gag muffling his terrified whimpers.

“So,” Danny said, his voice dangerously low, like a rumble of distant thunder. “This is it. The grand finale. You really went and did it, Mar.”

Marcus chuckled, a dry, papery sound. “What can I say, Danny? Some habits are harder to kick than others. And fifty million dollars? That’s a habit I’m willing to pick up. And keep.” He gestured vaguely at Leo. “This little distraction was just… a necessary evil. A bargaining chip.”
