Chapter 14
Old Habits Die Hard
The fight for Leo intensifies Danny's internal conflict. He grapples with reverting to his ruthless street persona versus clinging to the hope of a better future.
The stale air of the abandoned warehouse clung to Danny like a cheap suit, thick with the scent of damp concrete and desperation. Dust motes danced in the weak shafts of light that sliced through grimy windows, each one a tiny, mocking reminder of the cleaner world he was so desperately trying to inhabit. But that world felt a million miles away, buried somewhere beneath the grit and grime of this forgotten place. Leo. The single word echoed in the cavernous space, a hollow ache in Danny’s chest. His kid brother. The only decent thing Danny had ever managed to hold onto, and now, gone.
He kicked a loose brick, sending it skittering across the floor with a clatter that seemed to amplify the emptiness inside him. This wasn't supposed to happen. He was supposed to be the protector, the guy who kept Leo safe from the shadows that had swallowed him for so long. Now, those shadows had reached out and snatched the one light in his life. He’d traded his old life for a shot at redemption, a clean slate, a chance to be the brother Leo deserved. And here he was, already slipping, already back in the muck, his hands dirty with the very things he’d sworn to leave behind.
“Come on, Danny, you can do this,” he muttered to himself, his voice a rough whisper. He’d always been good at talking himself into and out of trouble, a skill honed on the unforgiving streets. But this was different. This wasn't about a quick buck or a narrow escape. This was about Leo. And the thought of Leo, his innocent eyes wide with fear, made a cold knot tighten in Danny’s gut.
