The Moral Tightrope
Danny is forced into morally gray areas, making compromises that chip away at his desire for redemption. The line between good and evil blurs.
The alley reeked of stale beer and desperation, a familiar perfume Danny hadn't inhaled in years, not since he’d traded his chipped-tooth grin for a slightly-less-chipped-tooth smile and a stab at legitimacy. But here he was, hunched against a graffiti-scarred brick wall, the damp seeping into his threadbare jacket, a stark contrast to the crisp, new shirts he’d been trying to cultivate. He was meeting the Ghost. Not a literal specter, though the way he moved and the whispers that followed him made you wonder, but a man named Silas, who’d once been the king of the shadows Danny used to inhabit.
“You look like a stray cat that’s been caught in a rainstorm, Danny,” Silas rasped, his voice like gravel tumbling down a chute. He emerged from the gloom like a magician, though his trick was usually making people disappear, not appear. His eyes, sharp and assessing, swept over Danny, missing nothing.
Danny managed a weak grin. “Just trying to get back into the old neighborhood, Silas. Decided to dust off my charisma and charm the pigeons.”
