The alley reeked of stale beer and desperation, a familiar perfume that clung to Danny Bird like a cheap suit. He squinted, the flickering neon sign of "Slick Rick's Pawn Shop" casting garish shadows that danced like nervous ghosts. This was his old stomping ground, a place he’d sworn to leave behind, yet here he was, wading back into the muck. Every corner held a memory, a face from a life he was desperately trying to outrun. He’d traded the thrill of the chase for the quiet hum of a legitimate life, or at least, he’d tried. But Leo. Leo’s vanishing act had ripped a hole right through that carefully constructed facade, yanking him back into the abyss.

A gruff voice, thick with years of nicotine and bad decisions, startled him. "Danny? Is that really you, bird brain?"

Danny turned, a weary smile playing on his lips. It was Benny "The Bolt," a man whose fingers were as quick with a lock as his mouth was with a rumour. Benny’s face was a roadmap of hard living, etched with a thousand stories Danny didn’t want to revisit.
