Mark felt a familiar knot of anxiety tighten in his stomach. He’d spent the last hour replaying the near-disaster outside “The Gilded Spoon,” his heart thumping a frantic rhythm against his ribs. Chloe, bless her surprisingly agile reflexes, had practically melted into the shadows of the alleyway as if she were a seasoned spy, leaving Mark to perform a bizarre, one-man interpretive dance of "man trying to subtly hail a taxi while simultaneously looking like he’s having a stroke." His eldest, bless her oblivious teenage soul, had breezed past with a wave, utterly unaware of the romantic melodrama unfolding mere feet away.

The drive home was a blur of flashing streetlights and the incessant hum of the engine, each mile a reminder of the monumental tightrope he was now walking. He’d agreed to this date, this… what even was this? Chloe was eighteen, a student, and, most terrifyingly, a classmate of his daughter. The age gap was one thing, a chasm he’d tried to bridge with witty banter and sheer force of will. But the proximity to his daughter’s world? That was uncharted, treacherous territory. He’d always prided himself on being a good dad, a protector. This felt like a betrayal, a reckless gamble with his daughter’s trust, even if she never found out.
