Chapter 18
The Demon's Grateful Nod
During his hellish journey, only one demon acknowledged him, offering gratitude for his presence at Lucifer's Palace, a moment of strange peace.
The air tasted like burnt sugar and forgotten promises. Each breath was a rasp, a violation. I was trudging through a landscape of cracked obsidian, where the sky wept molten lead and the ground pulsed with a low, guttural thrum. This was it, the belly of the beast, Lucifer’s Palace. I’d painted it, breathed it, *felt* it into existence, and now I was walking its charred halls. Behind me, the canvas, the one I’d conjured in a feverish twenty minutes, was playing host to my spectral journey. The abstract chaos had bled into a discernible path, a dark hallway with demons, gaudy and grotesque, reveling in what looked like a twisted jubilee. Lilith, a whirlwind of serpentine grace and eyes like dying embers, was there, her laughter a cascade of broken glass. Lucifer, a silhouette of obsidian shadows, his presence a crushing weight, presided over it all.
The video, my video, flickered. The colors drained, replaced by stark black and white, a chilling imitation of death, my eyes appearing vacant, hollowed out. But my voice, calm, steady, narrated the scene, a disembodied observer in my own descent. The painting zoomed, the hallway widened, revealing the full scope of their infernal fête. It was a symphony of damnation, a celebration of all that was lost, all that was broken. And then, the abrupt cut. Blackness. Silence.
But the silence didn't last. A new image bloomed, a vibrant, ethereal glow. Spirit fire in a primal forest, ancient and alive. In the center, a small, youthful spirit, its form shimmering with uncertainty, reached out. Reached for an angel. An angel with hands that promised solace, a guiding light in the encroaching darkness. The contrast was stark, jarring. From the pits of despair to the precipice of salvation, all within the span of a song, a painting, a vision.
