The air in the monastery’s great hall had grown thick, not with incense as usual, but with an unspoken tension that coiled around Evelyn like a serpent. The flickering candlelight cast long, dancing shadows that distorted the austere faces of the monks gathered, their gazes fixed, unnervingly, on Father Michael. He stood at the head of the assembly, his usual benevolent smile replaced by a steely resolve that sent a shiver down Evelyn’s spine. “You claim to understand this text, Father,” Evelyn began, her voice resonating with a carefully controlled calm, though her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. “You claim it speaks of divine will, of salvation through faith.
