The city exhaled a humid breath, thick with the scent of exhaust fumes and something vaguely metallic, like old blood. Terry leaned against the cool brick of a warehouse, the rough texture a familiar comfort against his back. His eyes, sharp and unblinking, scanned the darkened street. Streetlights cast long, distorted shadows that danced like specters, each one a potential threat, each one a flicker of unease in the otherwise still night. He felt it, a low thrum beneath the surface of the city’s usual chaos, a shift in the wind that spoke of something more than just another humid summer evening.

The higher you climbed, the more enemies you made, the more likely you were to lose your footing. He’d seen it happen before, seen empires crumble from within, brought down by a single misplaced trust, a single moment of weakness.
