Chapter 16
The King Falls
In a brutal, no-holds-barred fight, the rival kingpin is finally defeated. However, the victory comes at a devastating cost, leaving Capone and his crew reeling from the losses.
The air hung thick and metallic, the coppery tang of fresh blood a stark counterpoint to the acrid smoke that curled from shattered streetlights. The pre-dawn chill did little to numb the raw, primal ache that pulsed through Capone’s veins. He stood amidst the wreckage of what had been a meticulously planned ambush, a monument to his hubris and the sheer, unadulterated savagery of the city’s underbelly. Around him, the sounds of the aftermath were a symphony of suffering: ragged breaths, choked sobs, the low groan of dying engines.
The rival kingpin, a viper named Silas, lay sprawled on the cracked asphalt, his once-proud frame twisted at an unnatural angle. His eyes, wide and glassy, stared up at a sky that was just beginning to bleed into a bruised purple. He was a testament to Capone’s cold, calculated fury, a brutal punctuation mark at the end of a sentence Capone had been writing in blood for weeks. But the victory, if it could be called that, felt like a hollow echo in a cavern of despair.
Capone’s gaze swept over the scene, each fallen soldier a fresh wound. He saw the familiar faces, the men who had bled and sweated and killed for him, now reduced to broken statutes in this urban graveyard. Terry, his rock, his silent shadow, was on his knees beside a young man Capone barely recognized, his usually stoic face etched with a grief that ran deeper than any battlefield wound. Terry’s hands, usually so steady, trembled as he tried to staunch a flow of blood that refused to be contained.
