Elias probes gently, his questions hinting at a past Rose desperately wants to forget. Fragments of memory, long suppressed, begin to stir in the shadows of her mind.
The city breathed around us, a symphony of sirens and distant laughter, but within the confines of Elias’s penthouse, a different kind of quiet settled. It wasn't the tense silence of a negotiation or the hushed anticipation before a strike; it was a fragile peace, woven from the lingering scent of his cologne and the warmth of his body pressed against mine. He held me loosely, his thumb tracing lazy circles on my arm, a gesture so simple, so tender, it felt like an alien invasion. My fortress, meticulously constructed over years of ice and steel, was showing hairline fractures.
"You’re quiet tonight," Elias murmured, his voice a low rumble against my ear.
I shrugged, pulling my knees to my chest. The silk sheets felt cool against my skin, a stark contrast to the heat that had simmered between us earlier. "Just thinking."
