The city’s pulse thrummed beneath my feet, a familiar rhythm that had once been a comfort, now a constant reminder of the precariousness of my reign. Rain slicked the cobblestones of the alley, mirroring the sheen of fear in the eyes of the man cowering before me. His name, if it even mattered, was lost to the wind and the desperate gasps escaping his lips. He’d crossed me, a cardinal sin in my world, his betrayal a venomous sting that still burned beneath my skin. My gloved hand tightened around the cold steel of the pistol. The weight of it was a familiar anchor, a tangible manifestation of the power I wielded.
