The city lights of New York, usually a comforting tapestry of power and control, felt… different tonight. They glittered with a sharpness that pricked at my senses, each distant siren a discordant note in the symphony I’d orchestrated. Elias Thorne. The name echoed in my mind, a persistent hum beneath the surface of my usual calm. He was a phantom who had materialized from the shadows, and lately, the shadows seemed to be clinging to him, not me.

It started subtly, a nagging unease that I’d tried to dismiss as the natural byproduct of allowing someone so close. Elias was… intense. Not in the way my enemies were, with their overt threats and clumsy attempts at intimidation. His intensity was a slow burn, a quiet observation that saw too much. He’d waltzed into my life, a handsome enigma, and with unnerving speed, had begun to dismantle the carefully constructed walls I’d spent years reinforcing.

The way he looked at me, sometimes, it wasn't just desire. It was a deep, almost painful understanding that sent a shiver down my spine. He knew things, things I hadn't spoken aloud in years, things I’d buried so deep even I sometimes forgot they were there. The scar on my left wrist, a thin white line hidden beneath my tailored sleeves, the way I flinched at sudden loud noises, the almost unconscious habit of checking exits in any room I entered – these were not things easily observed. These were things someone who had studied me, truly studied me, would notice.
