The city lights blurred into streaks of neon and starlight through the rain-streaked glass of my penthouse. Elias sat across from me, the low hum of the city a distant murmur against the thrumming in my own chest. He hadn’t pushed, not really, but his quiet presence, the steady gaze that saw too much, had chipped away at the last vestiges of my carefully constructed walls. Tonight, the dam had broken, and the floodwaters of memory were threatening to drown me.

“You want to know,” I said, my voice barely a whisper, rough with unshed tears. “You want to know why I’m like this. Why I built this empire on ice and steel.”

Elias nodded, his expression unreadable, yet I felt a warmth radiating from him, a silent invitation to unburden myself. He reached for my hand, his thumb tracing slow circles on my skin. It was a simple gesture, yet it felt monumental, a bridge across the chasm of my past.
