Chapter 14
Episode 14
The train chugged along, a metallic beast groaning under the weight of my despair. Portland loomed, a city I’d never wanted to see, a city that felt like a cage already. My parents’ recriminations followed me like a pack of wolves, their words a tangible force, pushing me further into a corner I couldn't escape. “Your fault,” they spat, their voices raw with a venom I’d grown accustomed to, yet never truly understood. “You’ve shamed us all.”
I, the one who recoiled from the acrid bite of cigarettes, the cloying sweetness of cheap liquor, the bitter tang of beer. I, the one who’d never sought solace in the fleeting oblivion of drugs. My siblings, my parents, their lives were a tapestry woven with threads of addiction and infidelity. Yet, here I was, the supposed stain on their honor. My only crime, it seemed, was the inconvenient truth I carried within me, a truth that refused to be silenced, a truth that, in their eyes, had backfired spectacularly.
The train rattled, each click of the wheels a reminder of the miles stretching between me and any semblance of peace. I closed my eyes, seeking the familiar, the only comfort I’d ever known. A whisper, cool and ancient, brushed against my ear, a phantom touch that chased away the chill of the present. Vlad. He was here, a silent sentinel in the storm of my life. His presence was a promise, a steadfast anchor in the turbulent waters of my existence. He had always been there, a guardian unseen, a shadow of protection woven into the fabric of my being since those tender years. He was my constant, my silent vow, the echo of a love that transcended time and space. He was the crimson petals blooming in the desolate landscape of my soul.
