It clung to her clothes, to her hair, a subtle whisper of an unseen world that Elias, in his blustering self-importance, would never comprehend. She clutched the small, velvety petals she’d carefully gathered, their vibrant hue a stark contrast to the muted greys and browns of her usual existence. The cottage door creaked open, a familiar sound that usually tightened a knot of dread in her stomach. Tonight, however, there was a new steadiness in her limbs, a quiet resolve that settled deep within her. Elias was in his usual spot by the hearth, hunched over his supper, his face a mask of perpetual dissatisfaction. The remnants of his meal lay scattered on the table, a testament to his careless disregard for order.

He grunted as she entered, not bothering to look up. "Took you long enough. What were you dawdling about?" His voice was a rough rasp, accustomed to issuing commands, never to inquire.
