The Hidden Sanctuary

The air in the small cottage, usually thick with the dust of Elias’s temper and the cloying scent of his displeasure, felt thin and brittle as Sarah moved through it. Each step was a careful negotiation, a dance on eggshells that had long since lost their protective shell. Elias had been particularly vexing that morning, his words like sharp pebbles thrown against her heart, leaving behind a dull ache that settled deep within her bones. He’d found fault with the porridge, the way she’d folded his shirts, even the quiet rhythm of her breathing, which he’d declared “too loud.”

Sarah had retreated, as she always did, to the small patch of garden behind the cottage, a place Elias deemed too insignificant to ever sully with his attention. It was a neglected space, more weeds than flowers, a testament to her own dwindling spirit. Yet, even here, amidst the tangled brambles and the defiant dandelions, a tiny spark of something akin to peace could sometimes be found. Today, however, even the familiar scent of damp earth and wilting blossoms offered little solace. The weight of Elias’s pronouncements pressed down on her, stealing the air from her lungs, dimming the already muted colours of her world.

Lost in her sorrow, she wandered further than usual, pushing through a thick curtain of ivy that clung stubbornly to the weathered stone wall at the very edge of their property. She’d never ventured this far before; Elias had always discouraged any exploration beyond the immediate vicinity of the cottage, his possessive gaze a constant reminder of her confinement. But today, a strange pull, a whisper of something unknown, drew her onward. The ivy parted with a reluctant sigh, and Sarah stepped through, her breath catching in her throat.
