Chapter 12
Embracing the Open Sky
She travels towards the horizon, the weight of Elias's control lifting with each step, the world opening up before her with promise.
The air tasted different out here, cleaner, lighter, carrying the scent of damp earth and the distant, sweet perfume of unknown blossoms. Sarah walked with a rhythm she hadn’t realized she’d lost, a gentle sway of her hips, a natural swing of her arms, no longer held rigid by the constant tension of Elias’s gaze. The path beneath her feet, though uneven and winding, felt like a welcome embrace, each step a deliberate movement away from the suffocating confines of her past. The weight she had carried for so long, a leaden cloak woven from Elias’s harsh words and relentless demands, was beginning to shed itself, piece by invisible piece. The sun, a benevolent eye in the vast expanse of the sky, warmed her face, coaxing a shy smile to her lips. She remembered how Elias had always complained about the sun, how it made his eyes water, how it bleached the color from his precious carpets. He had preferred the dim, perpetual twilight of their home, a place where shadows could easily hide the ugliness he cultivated. Sarah, however, drank in the sunlight like a parched flower, feeling its vital energy seep into her weary limbs, rekindling embers that she had long believed extinguished.
