Chapter 55

Episode 55

The crisp air, usually invigorating, now felt heavy against Amy’s skin. The bench beneath her offered little comfort, its weathered wood cool even through her simple dress. A weariness, deep and bone-settling, had settled upon her after a long day of walking, a day spent exploring the familiar yet ever-changing woods that skirted her home. The world outside, vibrant and bustling, often left her feeling like a spectator, an observer of a life she was only partially a part of. She’d sought this quiet spot, this small clearing where the sun dappled through the ancient oaks, hoping for a moment of peace, a respite from the restless energy that had been churning within her. She closed her eyes, inhaling the scent of pine needles and damp earth, trying to let the familiar aromas soothe her frayed nerves. It was in that moment of stillness, as the last vestiges of daylight painted the sky in hues of rose and gold, that a sudden, inexplicable shift occurred. The air around her thickened, not with the coming of night, but with an unseen energy, a palpable presence that prickled her skin. Her senses, usually attuned to the gentle hum of nature, sharpened with an intensity that was almost startling. A faint scent, like the ghost of woodsmoke and something wilder, something primal, brushed against her awareness. Her ears, straining against the rustling leaves, picked up a sound that wasn't there a moment before – a low growl, distant yet undeniably present, a sound that resonated deep within her bones. And then, the world, seen through her closed eyelids, seemed to shift. A faint, almost ethereal glow pulsed at the edges of her vision, and a surge of raw power, ancient and potent, coursed through her. It was a power she didn't understand, yet it felt undeniably hers. The weariness that had clung to her moments before evaporated, replaced by a fierce, primal alertness. Danger. The word, unbidden, bloomed in her mind, sharp and clear. It tasted of iron and fear on her tongue, a premonition carried on the wind.
