It had been a moment of pure, unthinking anger, a surge of frustration that had momentarily eclipsed the years of quiet protection, the invisible shield that had always surrounded her.

“I… I didn’t mean to,” she stammered, her voice barely a whisper. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, blurring the stern faces that watched her. She could feel it then, a subtle shift in the atmosphere, a prickling sensation on her skin that was both familiar and unnerving. It was as if the very air around her had thickened, charged with an unseen energy.

The woman who had been hurt, a colleague from the community center where Amy volunteered, looked at her with a mixture of pain and bewilderment. She was older, a kind woman with gentle eyes, and Amy’s heart ached at the thought of causing her distress. “It was an accident, Amy,” the woman said softly, her voice laced with a weariness that went beyond the physical pain. “But you were… you were so angry.”
