Amy’s fingers, still small but growing more deft with each passing year, traced the worn edges of the book. The tale within was one of ancient kings and forgotten battles, of bravery and betrayal. She didn’t yet grasp the full weight of the words, but the rhythm of the language, the rise and fall of the narrator’s voice, soothed her. It was a familiar comfort, a soft blanket woven from the threads of stories she’d always known.

She was in her small garden, the one tucked away behind the old oak that overlooked the town. It was a riot of color and scent, a private sanctuary where she often retreated. Today, the air was crisp, carrying the faint, earthy smell of damp soil and the promise of autumn. She was supposed to be reading about the valiant knight Sir Reginald, but her gaze kept drifting to the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves, to the busy dance of bees among the late-blooming roses.

A shadow fell over her page, and she looked up, a small smile already forming. It was the baker’s son, a boy named Tomas, his hands perpetually dusted with flour. He often stopped by, offering a warm loaf or a sweet pastry, his eyes always holding a gentle curiosity.
