Chapter 40
Episode 40
Amy’s footsteps, usually so light, now dragged with a weariness that settled deep into her bones. The summer sun, once a benevolent warmth, felt heavy, pressing down with an oppressive heat. She’d spent the day walking, exploring the rolling hills that bordered her quiet town, a restless energy propelling her forward, a need for… something. She couldn't quite name it. It was a familiar ache, a yearning that had become a constant companion, a subtle dissonance beneath the surface of her peaceful life.
She reached the familiar, weathered bench at the edge of her property, its dark wood worn smooth by countless seasons and her own frequent visits. It was a beautiful world, a safe world, a world she had always known.
And yet, as she sat there, a profound stillness descended, not the peaceful quiet she usually experienced, but a charged, expectant hush. The chirping of the birds seemed to falter, the gentle rustle of leaves stilled. A prickle of unease, a sensation utterly alien to her days of serene protection, began to crawl up her spine. It was a feeling of being utterly, completely alone, a sensation that no amount of intuition or ingrained comfort could dispel.
