The air in the abandoned automaton workshop hung thick with the scent of ozone and forgotten oil. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy skylights, illuminating a scene of mechanical decay. My tail twitched, a nervous habit I couldn't shake, as I picked my way through the skeletal remains of clockwork contraptions. Kael had said this place was a dead end, a forgotten relic of the city’s booming industrial past, but something had drawn me here, a faint hum beneath the silence, a whisper that tickled the edges of my awareness.

My fingers, calloused from countless nights spent tinkering with salvaged tech, brushed against a loose floorboard. It shifted with a groan, revealing a dark cavity beneath. My heart hammered against my ribs. This was it. The feeling was undeniable, a pull stronger than any shadow I’d ever chased. I knelt, prying the board fully open.

Inside, nestled on a bed of faded velvet, lay an object that seemed to absorb the meager light. It was a locket, intricately carved from a metal I didn't recognize, cool and strangely heavy in my palm. It wasn't ornate in a way that screamed wealth, but in a way that spoke of purpose, of ancient craftsmanship. As my fingers traced the swirling patterns, a jolt, not of electricity but of something far more primal, shot up my arm.
