The alley reeked of ozone and something metallic, like a busted circuit board left out in the rain. My ears twitched, picking up the frantic scuttling of rats and the distant, rhythmic thrum of the city’s energy grid. It was the kind of place where shadows clung like damp fabric, and secrets festered. I was deep in it, my tail lashing a nervous rhythm against my torn jeans, when I heard it – a low whistle, sharp and clear, cutting through the grime.

I froze, instincts screaming danger. My fingers tightened around the chipped metal pipe I carried for just such occasions. Figures, after that mess with the Syndicate goons, they’d be looking for me. But the whistle wasn’t the guttural bark of their enforcers. It was… different. More melodic, almost playful.

A figure detached himself from the deeper darkness near a overflowing dumpster. He was lean, wiry, with a mop of dark hair that looked like it had lost a fight with a static generator. His eyes, even in the dim light filtering down from the towering chrome structures above, were sharp and assessing. He wore a patched-up leather jacket, more grease stains than original material, and his hands were shoved deep into his pockets.
