The Mark of the Hunted
Constant flight becomes their new reality. Every city, every town, every darkened alley offers only temporary respite. They are perpetual fugitives, their lives a blur of paranoia and fear. Victoria's influence stretches far and wide; every stranger could be an informant, every shadow a potential ambush. The gnawing hunger is a constant companion, a torment that never ceases. They are forced to feed on animals and the scum of the city, a grim necessity that leaves them feeling hollow and disgusted. The mark of the hunted is upon them, a scarlet letter of their cursed existence, and the thirst never stops.
The cobblestones of Crescent City, slick with a recent rain, offered no comfort. Each step was a gamble, a prayer that the slick surface wouldn't betray us, that the echoing clatter of our boots wouldn't announce our presence to the night. We were ghosts, not by choice, but by necessity. The world had become a tapestry of shadows, and we were the threads that didn't belong, forever trying to weave ourselves into the periphery.
"This is fucked," Jeff muttered, his voice a low growl against the damp air. He huddled deeper into his worn leather jacket, the collar pulled high. His eyes, usually bright with a mischievous spark, were shadowed with a weariness that went deeper than mere exhaustion. It was the weariness of being hunted.
"You know what else is fucked?" I countered, my own voice rough. "The fact that we can't even grab a decent cup of coffee without looking over our shoulders like we’re smuggling state secrets." I forced a sarcastic laugh, but it died in my throat. The hunger was a constant ache, a gnawing emptiness that no amount of stale bread or lukewarm water could appease. It was a primal need, a beast clawing at the inside of my ribs, demanding blood.
