Jeff stood beside me, his jaw tight, his usual swagger replaced by a brittle tension. He glanced at me, a flicker of fear in his eyes that he quickly masked with defiance. He was still reeling from Derrick’s… disappearance. The silence that had followed Derrick’s vanishing act had been more deafening than any scream, a void that had swallowed Jeff’s bravado whole. I knew he blamed himself, just as I blamed myself for the entire fucking mess.
