The Vampire's Court

The air in Lady Victoria Demetria’s… court, for lack of a better word, was thick with the scent of old money and something far more primal. It clung to the velvet drapes, to the polished mahogany of the impossibly long table, to the very bones of the ancient structure. Jeff, tethered by unseen forces to a gaudy, gilded chair, felt it seep into his lungs, a cloying perfume that promised decay. He’d seen opulent rooms before, even rooms that smelled vaguely of death, but this was different. This was a carefully curated tomb, a monument to a power that had existed long before the stones of this place were laid.

Lady Victoria herself sat at the head of the table, a vision in obsidian silk that seemed to drink the meager light filtering through the stained-glass windows. Her eyes, twin pools of molten gold, tracked his every tremor. She hadn't spoken since they’d dragged him in, a silent, unnerving appraisal that felt more invasive than any physical touch. Her stillness was a predator’s stillness, coiled and ready.

Beside her, a hulking brute of a vampire, all sharp angles and predatory grace, watched with an expression of bored cruelty. Jeff recognized him from whispers, from the panicked tales of those who’d brushed too close to their Maker’s orbit. He was one of her enforcers, a living testament to her displeasure.
