Chapter 14
A Lover's Lament
Derrick, Jeff's secret lover, a fragile soul who exists only for Jeff, becomes an unwitting pawn in Victoria's cruel game. His quiet existence is shattered when Victoria's influence reaches him. The threat to Derrick's life is palpable, a devastating blow to Jeff's already fragile emotional state. In a moment of desperate protection, Jeff makes a rash decision, a move that leads to a devastating loss. Derrick, caught in the crossfire of the supernatural war, is brutally taken from him, leaving Jeff consumed by grief and rage, his carefully constructed defenses crumbling.
The rain hammered down on the grimy alley, each drop a tiny, cold fist against my skin. It was the kind of rain that didn't cleanse, only smeared the filth deeper into the city’s already stained soul. I huddled deeper into the doorway, the damp chill seeping through my threadbare jacket, a stark contrast to the burning thirst that always lurked just beneath the surface. Jeff was asleep, or pretending to be, in the cramped room above the derelict bakery we’d claimed as our own for the night. His breathing was shallow, a constant reminder of the fragile mortality I’d bought for him, and the eternal damnation I’d accepted for myself.
The ache in my throat was a familiar companion, a gnawing emptiness that no amount of water could fill. It had been days since I’d had a… proper meal. The thought sent a shiver down my spine, a mix of revulsion and desperate longing. I clenched my jaw, the taste of stale fear and damp concrete filling my mouth. I hated this. Hated the weakness, the constant vigilance, the gnawing hunger that threatened to consume me from the inside out. But mostly, I hated that I’d dragged Jeff into this mess.
A soft scuffing sound from the street below jolted me from my misery. My head snapped up, senses on high alert. It wasn't the heavy tread of a mortal, nor the furtive steps of a fellow refugee. This was… deliberate. Measured. A predator’s grace. My blood ran cold, not from the rain, but from the icy dread that coiled in my gut. Lady Victoria. She was closer than I’d dared to imagine.
